Questions about Jein
Short answers. The docs have the detail.
- What is Jein?
- Jein is a ready-to-use API for Laya, the open-source decision model. Send a short text and the questions you need answered, such as which team should handle a message or how urgent it is, and get back a clear decision and how sure the model is. Free during the preview, hosted in the EU.
- What do teams use a decision model for?
- Jobs that repeat all day: routing support messages to the right team, sorting contact forms into sales, support and spam, flagging rude comments before they go live, triaging bug reports. The model decides in a blink, your code acts on the answer, and only the unclear cases go to a person.
- Is Laya the same as Jev?
- No. Jev is TypeSafe's proprietary model. Laya is an open-source model built for the same kind of decisions and the same request format. Jein runs Laya, so you get Jev-style decisions on a model you are free to take anywhere.
- Can I use the TypeSafe SDK with Jein?
- Yes. Change two settings, the base URL and the API key, and the TypeSafe SDK for Python or JavaScript sends its requests to Jein. The migration guide in the docs shows the exact steps.
- Why use Jein instead of running Laya myself?
- Because a self-hosted Laya needs a server running around the clock, even when it sits idle most of the day, plus setup, updates, monitoring, and the keys, limits and usage tracking you would have to build yourself. Jein gives you the same model as a ready API, free during the preview, and you can still move to your own server whenever you like.
- What does it cost?
- Nothing during the preview. A free account comes with 500,000 input tokens a month, enough for thousands of short messages. No credit card needed.
- Where does Jein run, and is the text stored?
- Jein is hosted in the EU. The texts you send are processed and forgotten: they are never stored, never read by anyone and never used for training. Only token counts are kept, so you can see your usage.
- What kind of text works best?
- The short texts that pile up in everyday work: messages, form submissions, comments, reviews, bug reports.
- Which languages work?
- English, German, French, Spanish and dozens more. Laya was benchmarked on 51 languages.
- Who runs Jein?
- Jein is an independent project, built and run in Germany. We want to make open decision models easy for anyone to use: sign up, get a key and send your first request in minutes, with no server to run. Jein is not affiliated with TypeSafe.
